Background of the Study:
Women’s micro-enterprises have emerged as a cornerstone for promoting family welfare in Yenagoa LGA, Bayelsa State. These small-scale businesses empower women by providing economic opportunities, enhancing household income, and fostering community development (Okafor, 2023). Despite socio-cultural challenges and limited access to capital, women entrepreneurs continue to drive innovation and economic growth in their communities. Their enterprises often operate in informal sectors, contributing significantly to local economies and improving family welfare through increased financial stability (Eze, 2024). This study assesses the role of women’s micro-enterprises in enhancing family welfare, focusing on factors such as business sustainability, income diversification, and social empowerment. Prior research indicates that women-led micro-enterprises can alleviate poverty and stimulate economic participation (Nwosu, 2023). The investigation will consider the challenges these businesses face, including limited access to credit, market fluctuations, and regulatory constraints, and explore potential strategies for improvement. By integrating qualitative and quantitative analyses, the study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the socio-economic impact of women’s micro-enterprises in Yenagoa, thereby informing policy interventions and support mechanisms (Udo, 2025). The study further examines the role of community networks in supporting women entrepreneurs.

Statement of the Problem:
Despite the significant contributions of women’s micro-enterprises to family welfare in Yenagoa LGA, numerous challenges hinder their effectiveness. Limited access to financial resources, market constraints, and regulatory barriers have adversely affected business sustainability and growth (Okafor, 2023). As a result, many women entrepreneurs struggle to maintain consistent income flows, which impacts overall family welfare and social stability. These challenges highlight a gap between the potential and actual economic contributions of women-led enterprises (Nwosu, 2023). This study seeks to identify the key obstacles and propose practical solutions to bolster the success of women’s micro-enterprises.

Objectives of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of women’s micro-enterprises on family welfare.
  • To identify challenges affecting the sustainability of women-led businesses.
  • To recommend strategies to enhance access to financial and market resources.

Research Questions:

  • How do women’s micro-enterprises influence family welfare in Yenagoa LGA?
  • What are the primary challenges faced by women entrepreneurs in the region?
  • What strategies can improve the sustainability and growth of women’s micro-enterprises?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Women’s micro-enterprises significantly improve family welfare in Yenagoa LGA.
  • H2: Limited access to credit and market opportunities negatively impacts business sustainability.
  • H3: Strategic policy interventions can enhance the success of women-led enterprises.

Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it examines the role of women’s micro-enterprises in enhancing family welfare in Yenagoa LGA. Its findings will inform policymakers and stakeholders on effective support mechanisms for women entrepreneurs. By addressing the challenges faced by these businesses, the research contributes to broader discussions on gender empowerment and sustainable economic development (Eze, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to assessing the impact of women’s micro-enterprises on family welfare in Yenagoa LGA. It does not cover enterprises outside the women-led sector or additional economic sectors.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Micro-enterprises: Small-scale businesses typically characterized by limited capital and workforce.
  • Family Welfare: The overall well-being and quality of life of household members.
  • Economic Empowerment: The process of increasing economic capacity and independence, particularly for women.
